Oily skin and blackheads

Why does oily skin develop?

Oily skin is characterized by the excessive functioning of the sebaceous glands: as a result, the skin of the face can be oily and shiny, and at the same time rougher to touch and duller in color. The pores are large, clearly visible, blackheads and acne are common, as too much sebum easily accumulates in the pores.

The causes of oily skin

Oily skin is basically caused by an overproduction of sebum. Sebum is naturally produced by the skin to protect and moisturise itself. There is a sebaceous gland under every pore. When the skin is oily, the sebaceous glands tend to overproduce sebum, which can lead to shiny, oily skin and the appearance of blackheads and other spots.

Here are some common factors that can lead to oily skin:

1. Genetics

Oily skin usually has a genetic component, and you may be more prone to this skin type if you have an immediate family member with oily skin.

2. Washing your face too often

While oily skin may prompt you to wash your face several times a day, excessive cleansing can cause pores to overflow. When too much oil is removed from the surface of the skin, the pores produce more oil to protect the skin from drying out. Wash your face only twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.

3. Hormonal causes of oily skin

Androgenic hormones cause our glands to produce more oil. The higher the amount of androgen hormone present, the more sebum is produced and secreted through the pores of the skin. This is why oily skin is common during puberty, when hormones are at their peak. As you age, your skin produces less sebum and your skin becomes drier.

Certain medicines, such as contraceptives or hormone replacement pills, can also affect the condition of the skin. Other medicines, especially those containing steroids, can also cause oily skin

4. Omission of moisturising cream

It is a common misconception that moisturisers can cause oily skin. In fact. Daily moisturiser use is an essential part of a good skincare routine. If we don't moisturise, the skin can produce more oil to compensate for the dryness of the face. To moisturise oily skin, choose an oil-free moisturiser that helps hydrate the skin without clogging pores.

5. Pore-clogging cosmetics

When buying make-up, we recommend choosing oil-free products. These types of products are designed to prevent clogging of pores and are ideal for oily skin types. At the end of the day, use a make-up remover wipe to remove make-up as part of your nightly skincare routine.

6. Humid climate

People who live in tropical or humid climates are more likely to have oily skin than those who live in dry environments. Skin may appear oilier in the summer months than in autumn and winter.

7. Nutrition

Although it can be hard to resist sweets and dairy products, and eating these foods can lead to excessive sebum production and the oily skin that comes with it.

Eating antioxidant-rich foods and drinking enough water not only does wonders for your wellbeing, it can also benefit your skin.
